Adidas Boosting on the Competition: The Technology…


Over the past couple years you can’t stop hearing the about Adidas Boost in the sneaker world. But like most crazes they come and go with Nike usually still holding the champion belt of longevity over the competition. But, this time something different happened…you start seeing Boost this and Boost that to the point where you couldn’t ignore the movement when you heard Yeezy Boosts. So, the question is what is Adidas Boost? How does it work? And most importantly how did last the low attention span of the sneaker community? Let’s take a look shall we…

What is Adidas Boost?

Adidas has never been one to known for their sneaker technology, but more for their iconic sneakers that have molded certain time periods. An example of this would be the Adidas All Stars aka the “Shell Toes”, which are pretty much considered the Hip-Hop sneaker made famous by Run DMC. In the 90s they introduced their Torsion technology and well…yeah we pretty much forgot about it. So the question is how does a sneaker company flex their muscle in a market that is dominated by “Air”?


Well…you Boost on the competition! In 2013 Adidas released their new technology to the sneaker world called simply “Boost”. They stated that it was going to be a revolutionary cushioning technology that was supposed to deliver energy in return. This got the attention of most people because to go up against the mighty Nike Air technology you’re going to have to come STRONG or risk being another failed brand! There’s a lot at risk when going up against a giant and if you lose the trust of the sneaker community it’s VERY hard to get back into the game…


At first glance of Adidas’ Boost technology most people would think they stuffed the sole full of Styrofoam. According to sources at Adidas the pellets that you see all fused together are called “Energy Capsules” and there are thousands of them put together. These capsules are produced by the world’s largest chemical producer BASF. Which means that Adidas was not playing around this time when it came to the investment into their new Boost technology. The Global Director of Performance, James Carnes is quoted as saying “The way that it gives back, it deforms. The amount of deformation and the way it retruns and deforms in different angles, is uniquely similar to the way your foot works.”


Adidas made a VERY bold claim stating that their Boost technology would revolutionize the running industry to make way for other great additions to other high performance sneakers. Regardless of the claims that Adidas was making there was a demand in the sneaker world for something different…especially outside of the Nike family and if it was done right we all knew that it would blow up. The first taste that we got from Adidas was the Pure Boost. Nothing too special in the sense of design and fairly priced so you didn’t feel like you were going to blindly break the bank…but what we all wanted to know was it comfortable. The quick answer…HELL YEAH!


With the huge success of the Pure Boost Adidas did not waste any time the following year (2014) and dropped the Ultra Boost on the market. The claim for this sneaker was it was to be the “world’s best running shoe”…really? Seeing that it was a VERY new technology and Adidas has had their share of failures this was a bold claim to make. Even with all the success of the Boost technology the main question is what would you do to convince the diehard sneakerheads to jump on board? Who would Adidas entrust their new Boost technology to in order to take it to the next level…
